She was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church . She survived the traumatic years of growing up in a city that saw repeated bombings. She graduated high school and was working in an office when she met her first husband, Harry Kreissler. He was in the Army and stationed in Nuremberg at the end of Word War II. Harry returned to Deshler after his honorable discharge and sent for Annemarie. She was 20 years old when she came to the United States by ship in 1947 to marry Harry. Annemarie and Harry had two daughters: Linda Anne and Marlis Jean. Annemarie became a naturalized citizen after living in this country on May 29, 1959. Harry, Linda and Marlis were so proud to accompany her when she took her citizenship oath in Lincoln , Nebraska . Annemarie worked in the laundry area at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home for more than 25 years. She retired and then worked several years at the C Stop in Deshler. In November 1987 Annemarie married Robert Bliss, who was a retired game warden from upper New York State . They lived on Robert's acreage outside of Cazenovia , New York . Annemarie worked in the cafeteria of a local middle school. Robert passed away in March of 1996 and Annemarie moved back to Deshler. Annemarie was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler for 65 years. She was active in the Ladies Auxiliary and the Merry Moderns Home Extension Club. For several years, she particularly enjoyed the companionship and fellowship of fellow church members while tying quilts during the winter months for the Orphan Grain Train. Those quilts were sent overseas to provide warmth to people in poor countries who had very few belongings. During the years the grandchildren were young, Marlis' and Linda's children had a great time spending the night at Grandma Bliss'. Her upstairs was a treasure trove of toys that belonged to her daughters and were much enjoyed by the grandchildren even though the toys had seen better days. Annemarie liked to crochet and made afghans for her grandchildren. She also knitted scarves and mittens for them. Annemarie enjoyed reading historical novels and modern fiction. She got most of her books from the public library though some were loaned by friends.
