Arla Louise Zabel, the daughter of Melvin E. Shultz and Veda (Olzon), was born December 25, 1928 in Fairbury, NE. She passed from this life on Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home in Hebron, Nebraska at the age of 84 years. Arla grew up in Fairbury and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1947. She went on to earn her teaching certificate and taught school for four years. She married Wendell Zabel on June 1, 1949 in Fairbury.
Arla enjoyed being very active in the Davenport, NE community, where they lived for many years and was part of numerous clubs and organizations. She was a member of the Davenport United Methodist Church, was a member of UMW and taught Sunday school. Arla was a lifetime member of the Davenport American Legion Auxiliary Post #335, Davenport Eastern Star, P.E.O. in Hebron, Davenport Women's Club, The Golden Rockers Trailer Club and a Girl Scout Leader.
Traveling, following her grandchildren's activities, gardening, baking and helping on the farm was some of her joys.
Those that preceded her in death are her parents, and husband of 62 years, Wendell in 2011; a brother Charles Shultz; brothers-in-law, Richard Zabel and Charles Sukovaty.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters and their husbands, Debra and Phil Johnson of Davenport, NE and Christine and Roger Fehr of Edgar, NE; sister, Deb Marian Wittler, of Loveland, CO; grandchildren, Tracy (Derek) Anderson of Wayne, NE, Daniel Johnson of Hebron, Anthony (Rachel) Fehr of Iowa City, IA; and Brian Fehr of Chicago, IL; great grandchildren, Dylan, Gavin and Adrienne Anderson; Darin and Allison Fehr; sisters-in-law, Lois Sukovaty of Phoenix, AZ, and Wanda Shultz and Jean Zabel of Fairbury.
Services will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Davenport United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Monday, May 20 from 12:00 to 8:00 PM with family receiving friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Urbauer-Price Funeral Home in Davenport, NE. Interment will be in the Davenport City Cemetery following the burial. Memorials are suggested to the family.
