Arthur W. Brettmann, 101, of Deshler, NE, passed away on January 3, 2015, at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron, NE. He was born on the family farm near Deshler, NE on October 31, 1913, the son of Fred and Maria (Vorderstrasse) Brettmann.
Arthur was baptized on November 13, 1913 and confirmed on May 29, 1913 in Peace Lutheran Church by Rev. John Schwerin, where he is still a member. He married Twila Bauer on April 5, 1940 in Deshler, NE at The Peace Lutheran Parsonage and celebrated 74 years of marriage. To this union one son was born.
He was the second youngest of 12 children. Art has been a member of the Deshler community for all of his life. He attended school at # 86, but during the hard times of the 30’s he had to quit school early to help on the family farm. Art loved playing baseball when he was younger. Art’s team was named the Sunny South. Art farmed his whole life and after retirement, he continued to work with horses. He bred, worked and trained paint horses and showed them in Nebraska and Colorado for about 10 years.
Arthur was a member of the Thayer County Livestock Feeders Association, American Paint Horse Association, Quarter Horse Association, Thayer County Golf Association and the Izacc Walton League. He also was awarded the Soil and Water Conservation Award, and the Pioneer Farm Family Award on two separate quarters that have been in the family for over 100 years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, watching westerns and showing his horses and colts. One of his horses was the Heading and Heeling State Champion.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Twila (Bauer) Brettmann of Deshler, NE; his son and his wife, Gary and Denise Brettmann of Deshler, NE; grandsons and their wives, Todd Brettmann of Parker, CO, Craig and Nada Brettmann of Littleton, CO and Robert and Lisa Noel of Henderson, CO; great-grandchildren, Kaile Brettmann, Isaiah Hernandez, Raylynn Noel and Brody Brettmann; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl, George, Fred, Edwin and John; and sisters, Margaret Brettmann, Lydia Layman, Alma Elvers and Edna Rix.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler, NE with Pastor Cathi Braasch officiating. Visitation will be Friday from noon until 7:00 PM at Ahrendts Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Deshler City Cemetery following the service. Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Cemetery Fund.
