Bernadene Ann Fry Mumm was born to Floyd Fry and Mary Wit Fry, on December 14, 1929 in Thayer County Nebraska and passed away on September 18, 2013, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 9 months, and 4 days. She was one of two children.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Hubbell Methodist Church. She was raised on a farm in Republic County Kansas and attended Loyalty Rural School, where the teacher actually lived with them. She attended two years of high school in Hubbell and two in Chester, NE where she graduated in 1947. She received normal training and taught school for three years at the Loyalty School.
She married Meredith "Bud" Mumm on March 14, 1948 in Belleville, Kansas. To this union four children were born. Bud and Bernadene lived on a farm east of Chester on Highway 8, just a short distance from Bud’s parents. They milked cows, raised cattle, and farmed with Bud’s family.
In 1957, they moved to a ranch in the Sandhills. She continued to help Bud around the farm: milking cows, mowing and raking hay with a little Case tractor, and helping with livestock. She also raised chickens, canned vegetables, sewed for her daughters, and helped with 4-H projects.
She and Bud attended many dances, and loved to play cards with their neighbors. In May of 1966, Bud and Bernadene moved to a farm near the Bruning/Alexandria/Belvidere area. Bernadene worked in the Hebron Care Home for a few years. In 1979, her and Bud built a new home in Hebron. She began to work as a cook/baker at the Hebron Public Schools for many years.
Bernadene enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s events, especially the sporting ones. And on the games she couldn’t get to, she would wait up until the phone call came to tell her if it was a loss or a win. She especially enjoyed going to the Nebraska State Football game in 2005 and sitting in the sky box to watch her grandsons win the championship.
Bernadene also did a lot of embroidering. She spent many hours embroidering tea towels to give as gifts and sewed each of her grandchildren a set. Her and Bud traveled, went to dances, and spent evenings playing cards with their friends.
Bud and Bernadene celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2008 with family and friends at a celebration in Belvidere.
She was a member of the XX Extension Club, Ladies Club, and the Neighborhood Club.
Bernadene moved to the Parkview Nursing Home in Deshler, Nebraska in October 2010. Bernadene had quite the sense of humor, enjoyed a good and usually had an opinion. She will be missed by all.
