Carol May Meyer was born to Henry A. and Helen (Rossmiller) Meyer on May 2, 1933. She was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler on May 14, 1933 by Pastor Cholcher. Her sponsors were Anna Meyer and Frieda and John Rossmiller. Carol was confirmed in Goodland, Kansas in 1946. After moving back to the Deshler area, Carol graduated from Deshler High School in 1952. She went on to Fairbury College where she received her teaching certificate and then taught country school in the Byron area for a number of years. She then went on to Hastings College where she was a member of Sigma Tau Sigma Society and the Travel Club majoring in medical technology. This plan was cut short with her first heart surgery. Carol married Don Deepe on April 19 th , 1959 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Deshler by Pastor E. C. Werner. To this union three children were born: Deb Pohlmann of Deshler, Mark Deepe of York and Julie Deepe of Deshler. Don and Carol were host parents to Sven Tacke of Wuppertal, Germany. After his year-long stay, Sven and his wife Tanya are stilled considered a part of the family. Carol was very proud of her grandchildren: Jordan Pohlmann and wife, Mary, of West Des Moines, Joshua Pohlmann of Lincoln, Brianna Pohlmann of Crete, Katelyn Pohlmann of Deshler, Christian Deepe of York, Amalie Tacke and Justus Tacke. She taught elementary school at Byron, Strang, Belvidere and Bruning. She was a bookkeeper for various businesses including Struve Enterprises, Deshler Rustler, and Thayer County Economic Development. Carol was a Sunday school teacher, bible study leader and taught and trained others to teach Bethel bible study classes. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Hebron. Carol served as Nebraska Independent Automotive Dealers Association (NIADA) Auxiliary president for two years where she helped raise money for scholarships. Carol has served the community of Deshler as both a school board and city council member. When life deals you lemons, make lemonade. That was Carol's motto. She was born with a heart defect, had heart surgery in 1958 and 1959 and a pacemaker in 1986. Her legacy has been to help others with health issues. For the last 15 years, Carol served as the Director of the Foundation for Thayer County Health Services and manager of the gift shop. If you visited the hospital, Carol knew it. If you needed money for something, Carol would get it. She loved writing grants and raising money for the hospital. As a testimony to her love of fundraising and the hospital, before her final procedure, Carol was badgering her anesthesiologist to form a golf team for the hospital fundraiser.
