David Charles Stairs was born on June 9, 1922, in rural Hebron, Nebraska to Irvin C. Stairs and Vera M. (Deming) Stairs. He died on February 16, 2012, at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron, Nebraska, at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 7 days. David served in the US Army from 1942-1945, he was part of the 754 th Field Artillery Battalion and fought in the "Battle of the Bulge". After completing his service he returned home, met and started his life with Colleen. On May 24, 1946, David was united in marriage to Colleen Powell in Mankato, Kansas. They have made their home for nearly 65 years in the rural Belvidere and Hebron areas. To this union were born three children: Ronald, Donald and William. David had three grandchildren, Dustin Stairs of Omaha and Amy (Stairs) Fetters of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Morgan Williams of Council Bluffs, Iowa. David had two great-grandchildren, Emma Fetters and Evan Fetters. David was an active farmer for many years. He was involved in the irrigation farming, stock and beef cattle. He was also active in the American Legion, which he was just honored for being a member for 50 years. David was preceded in death by his parents; older brothers, Roy and Gus; sister, Carolyn; and his wife Colleen. He leaves his sons: Donald of rural Hebron; Ronald and wife, Norma of Council Bluffs, Iowa; William (Bill) Stairs and wife, Theresa of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister, Irene Reynolds and husband, Bud of Mount Carroll, Illinois; along with grandchildren, Dustin and Agnes Stairs, Amy and Andy Fetters and Morgan Williams; the great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces, nephews and many other friends.
