Edward Gerald Wiedel, 90, of Hebron, formerly Deshler, departed this life on January 24, 2018, at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, Nebraska. Ed was born near Hebron on February 9, 1927, to Bernard and Elizabeth (Sohl) Wiedel. Ed grew up and attended Sacred Heart School. He graduated from Hebron High School with the class of 1945. On November 9, 1949, he married Norma Stephenson at Sacred Heart Church in Hebron with Father Clarence Crowley officiating. This union was blessed with two daughters, Shirley and Sharon. Ed and Norma lived on their farm north of Deshler for 45 years, raising cattle, hogs, sheep and chickens. In 1960 they started irrigating crops the old fashioned way by pipe and gradually changed to pivots. In 1993, they built a house on 1 st Street in Deshler and had their nephews to help with farming. Ed held various offices in Knights of Columbus and teaching CCD. He was president of the Deshler Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his service. He belonged to the Thayer County Fair Board many years and helped plan the building of the present grandstand. In 2012, he was Grand Marshall at the County Fair Parade. He worked many years for the ASCS. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Loraine Schnegelberger,Bernadine Timmermansand Kathleen Thompson, brothers, Henry, Herbert and Ernest, brothers-in-law, Charles Dvorak, Melvin Schnegelberger, Lee Dell Thompsonand Buzz Timmermans, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Wiedel. He will be forever remembered by his wife, Norma, daughters, Shirley Wiedel of Lincoln, Sharon (William) Gewain, granddaughter, Kimberly (Ryan) Cakerice, great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Landon Cakerice, all of Cary, North Carolina, sisters, Genieve Dvorak, Jeannette (Don) Dutcher of Colorado, sisters-in-law, Darlene Wiedel and Deloris Wiedel of Hebron, NE, nephews and nieces.
In lieu of an individual thank you note, Norma, Shirley and Sharon would like to personally thank each and every one who through a card, memorial, floral piece or a spoken word has shared their kindness and comfort during this time of sorrow due to the passing of Edward Wiedel.
