Ed was born January 18, 1932, to H. Fred and Meta Ficken in
Nuckolls County
,
Nebraska
.
He attended the
Aurora
District
County
School
and
St. Peters
Lutheran
Church
School
.
He graduated from
Davenport
High School
in 1950.
Ed worked for several area farmers and at the Navy Depot in
Hastings
,
Nebraska
before serving his country during the Korean Conflict from 1952 - 1954, where he was stationed on
Bambridge
Island
near
Washington
State
. On June 27, 1954, Ed married Donna Beavers of Davenport.
After his discharge, he and Donna returned to the family farm in
Nuckolls County
,
Nebraska
, where Ed farmed until his retirement in 1994.
Ed and Donna moved to
Colby
,
Kansas
in July of 2044.
He returned to the farm to help during the busy seasons.
Ed was a lifelong member of St. Peter's
Lutheran
Church
in
Davenport
,
Nebraska
before transferring to
Trinity
Lutheran
Church
in
Colby
,
Kansas
in 2008.
Ed served many years on the
Davenport
rural fire department.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna of Colby,
Kansas
.
He is also survived by son, Kent Ficken and wife, Berta of Kirk,
Colorado
; son, Kelly Ficken and wife, Pam of Davenport; and daughter, Kristie Jacobs and husband, Loren of Colby.
Ed has 18 grandchildren and step grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Rohr of
Tobias
,
NE
and L. Elaine Henkel of
Davenport
, other relatives and friends.
Services will be Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 11:00 AM at
Trinity
Lutheran
Church
in
Colby
,
Kansas
with Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel,
745 S. Country Club Drive
,
Colby
,
Kansas
in charge of the arrangements.
A memorial service will also be held at St. Peter's
Lutheran
Church
in
Davenport
on May 21, 2011, at 11:00 AM with Pastor Timothy Prince officiating.
