Elmer George Braun was born August 20, 1916 at Oak,

to Fredrick L. and Wilhemine (Hofts) Braun. He passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at the Blue Valley Nursing Home,

at the age of 96 years. Elmer was baptized September 3, 1916 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Deshler by Reverend Dageforde. In 1919 his parents moved to a farm south of
Carleton
,
Nebraska
. He attended Carleton public school and graduated in May 1939. He was confirmed in 1934 at the
Zion
Lutheran
Church
by Reverend Trost. Elmer was married to Vera Mae Waymen of Deshler in December of 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on October 7, 1943. He attended boot camp at
Farragut
,
Idaho
then radio school at
San Diego
naval training station. On August 3, 1944 he left for duty overseas. He was a "radio man" on the general command ships in the Pacific Theater of Operation, the
Philippines
,
New Guinea
, and the Pacific southwest. He received numerous ribbons and battle stars. He was honorably discharged on December 15, 1945. Elmer owned and operated the B & Z Oil Co. in
Hebron
from 1947 to 1953. Upon selling his business to Herman (Bud) Zuelsdorf, he and Vera moved to
Missouri
for a few years. In 1957 they moved to
Lincoln
,
Nebraska
. He began his employment with the Postal Department in 1959 and worked there until his retirement in 1981. They continued to live in
Lincoln
where one of his greatest enjoyments was bowling. Vera passed away in 1985 after a lingering illness. On August 16, 1987 he was married to Geneise (Lautenschlager) Hendershot of Hebron. They have lived in this area until his death. Elmer joined the First Christian Church,
Hebron
in March 1992. He has held many offices in the church. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, and playing cards. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; sister, Alvina Holtzen; and brothers: John, Henry, Walter, and Albert Braun. He will be forever remembered by his wife, Geneise of their home; step children: Jack & Nancy McLaughlin, Ralph & Judy McLaughlin, Lyle McLaughlin all of Hebron, Gary & Rena McLaughlin, Lincoln, Linda Simonsen, Ruskin, Lee & Barbara Hendershot, Nebraska City, and Jeanie Hendershot, Dallas; many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
