Our Almighty God created the life of Elmer Walter Schardt and on July 7, 1922 he was born to Ernst H. and Lillie (Vetter) Schardt at their farm north of Friedensau, Nebraska. God protected and sustained this life as Elmer lived here on earth until He called him to His heavenly home on Friday, August 21, 2015 at the age of 93 years. Elmer’s parents brought him to the waters of Holy Baptism at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hebron on July 9, 1922. Rev. H. Schabacker poured the water and by God’s power he was received in God’s Kingdom of Grace. Elmer grew in his faith and his knowledge of God, and on May 24, 1936, also at Trinity Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Theo Droegemueller, he was confirmed into the Christian faith and given Philippians 2:5 as his confirmation verse: "Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus." Elmer attended the North Rural School in the Friedensau area through the eighth grade, and then attended Carleton High School for two years. God gave to Elmer his wife, Alice L. Pohlmann of Deshler, Nebraska. They were married at Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler on May 29, 1949 with Rev. Fred Schwerin officiating. Elmer and Alice settled on a farm near Davenport and then moved to rural Hebron to continue his farming career. Elmer enjoyed dryland farming and raising cattle. He was able to remain and help on the farm until age 88, doing what he loved. He lived the last five years of his life at Courtyard Terrace in Hebron, Nebraska. God blessed Elmer and Alice with four children, Linda, James, Mark and Robert and raised them in the Christian faith. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his young son, James in 1956; wife Alice in 2000; two sisters, Gertrude Nehrig and Lillie Holtzen; three brothers, Harry, Wayne and Verland; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Elsie Schardt, Anita Schardt, Hulda Schardt, Robert Nehrig, Paul Wegener, and Milton Holtzen. He will be forever remembered by his children, Linda Bauer and husband James, Denver, Colorado; Mark Schardt and wife Barbara, rural Hebron; and Robert Schardt and wife Carol, York; one brother Ralph Schardt; one sister Mable Wegener and his sister-in-law Elaine Schardt; his precious seven grandchildren, Angela Bauer Hensiek and husband Jeffrey, Andrea Bauer Kidd and husband John, Maria Schardt Castens and husband Aaron, Adam Schardt Ogura and wife Nat, Lisa Schardt Ochs and husband Brian, Daniel Schardt, and Alyssa Schardt Jensen and husband Eric; seven precious great granddaughters, Emily and Lillian Hensiek, Alexa, Brielle, and Madelyn Castens, and Alice and Stella Ogura; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. To God alone goes all the praise, honor, and glory!
