Gladys Alvina Viola Jenkins was born June 23, 1923 in Deshler, Nebraska to Walter C. and Lydia H. (Tamme) Hillman. She was baptized July 8, 1923 at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler by Reverend Fred Schwerin and confirmed by him on June 12, 1938. Gladys was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church.
She attended Peace Lutheran and Deshler Lutheran schools. She graduated with the Class of 1942. On February 5, 1946 Gladys was united in marriage to LeRoy C. Jenkins at Salina, Kansas by Reverend Holges. To this union two daughters were born, Sandra and Carol.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband LeRoy; two brothers Otto and Alvin Hillman; her sister Joyce Schilling; sisters-in-law Gladys (Bartles) Hillman and Nadine Hillman; brother-in-law DeWayne Schilling; and son-in-law Ronald Mammen.
Gladys will be forever remembered by her daughters Sandra (Don) Spitler and Carol Mammen of Deshler; Four grandchildren, Kimberly (Bobby) Fayle, Deshler, Kathleen (Jon) Marquart, Byron, NE, Kristina (Andre) Legere, Beatrice, NE, Bryce (Betty) Mammen, Deshler; 10 great-grandchildren: Danielle (Jacob) Cathey, Amanda (Jeremy) Grant, Brody Fayle, Caleb Durflinger, Kelsey Durflinger and friend Chad Fleming, Coleton and Keira Marquart, Hayden, Danton and Alexis Cox; seven great-great-grandchildren: Braeden Fayle, Anakin Grant, Jaece and Jaelyn Fleming, Archer Durflinger, and twins Declan and Everleigh Cathey; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Gladys enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed visits from family and friends while hospitalized and residing in Parkview Haven Nursing Home. She worked in the Deshler Broom Factory where she painted handles for the toy brooms. She did ironing in her home for several Deshler families. She enjoyed gardening, canning, embroidery, doing crossword puzzles, word search books and putting jigsaw puzzles together. At Parkview, Gladys enjoyed playing Bingo, Horse Racing and Table Volleyball.
Gladys was in her home till December of 2018 when she fell and broke her hip. Following six weeks of therapy at Tabitha in Lincoln, NE, she returned to Deshler only to fall and break her hip once again. She then needed continual care and so she went to live in Parkview Haven in Deshler. As her health continued to fail, her life of 96 years came to a close Friday, February 7, 2020 while residing at Parkview Haven. Although missed by all, Gladys will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be 10:30am Wednesday, February 12th, 2020 at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler with Pastor Dennis Reich officiating.
