Listen to Obituary

Jack E. King of Hebron, Nebraska was the son of Herman and Emma King. He was born on April 5, 1932 in Riverton, Nebraska. He passed away on October 11, 2024, at Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron at the age of 92.

The youngest of four children, Jack grew up in Riverton, where he attended school. He helped his dad and others with farming during the years of the Great Depression.  Jack enlisted in the Army in December 1952. He served two years on the front lines during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in December 1954.

After returning home, he worked for List & Clark contractor. He surveyed (which he had learned in the Army) interstate roads and large dams, including the Wilson and Pamona Dam in Kansas and the Oahe Dam near Pierre, South Dakota. Later he worked for the Corps of Engineers in Kansas.

Jack married Patty Carroll on August 25, 1962, in Nelson, Nebraska. They were blessed with three children: Steven, Sharon and Scott. The couple moved to Hebron shortly after their marriage when Jack began working for the Soil Conservation Service for a few years. He then worked for the State Department of Roads in Hebron, doing road maintenance. Jack retired from this work in 1997 after 19 years of service.

Jack was a member of the Hebron Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion.

Spending time with family brought much joy to Jack - especially the grandchildren. Jack and Patty attended many of the activities that the children were in.

Jack always had a vegetable garden, spending many hours working in it. He provided the neighbors with fresh vegetables all summer. Jack also loved to fish and enjoyed the outdoors. When the children were still home, many camping trips were made to Lovewell Lake. He also enjoyed
animals and always had a pet dog until recent years.

Watching trains was an activity he so enjoyed, and he often went to Belvidere to watch the trains and count the cars. Tinkering with old clocks was another thing he enjoyed – all sizes and shapes of old clocks can be found at our house.  Jack was a handy man – a mechanic and builder.  The large garage shaped like a barn was built by Jack.  Also, he kept up the house with his carpentry skills.  He always kept the vehicles in top shape too!

Jack is survived by his wife Patty of Hebron, two sons and one daughter: Steven King and wife Lori of Topeka, Kansas, Sharon Savage and husband Tim of Wellsville, Kansas, and Scott King and wife Charity of Topeka. Grandchildren Trevor King, Madison King, Bodie King, Sierra Hooten, and Ryan Savage. Great-grandchildren Adeline Hooten and Wyatt Jack Hooten.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Emma King, his brother, Bob King, and sisters, Dorothy Scharff and Jaulene Sanger.

Jack will be greatly missed by his family.

Memorials have been established to the family's choice.
