Joyce Ardith (Stuehmer) Zucker, the youngest daughter of Arthur and Theresa (Schulz) Stuehmer, was born at home near Scribner , Nebraska , on December 15, 1928. She departed this life peacefully with family by her side at Parkview Haven in Deshler, Nebraska, on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at the age of 88 years and 27 days. Joyce was baptized on April 12, 1929, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Ridgely), rural Scribner, with her parents as her sponsors. She was confirmed on April 18, 1943, at Ridgely. Her confirmation verse was John 3:16. She attended District 12 country school until tenth grade. She finished her high school education at Scribner High School graduating in 1946 with a class motto: "Out of school life, into life’s school." On April 27, 1947, Joyce was united in marriage with John Henry Zucker at United Lutheran Church in Scribner. To this union five children were born: Ardythe Joyce, Mary Jo, Jane Terese, David John, and Paul Jeffrey. John and Joyce were blessed to celebrate fifty-four years of marriage before his death on March 2, 2002. Before marriage Joyce worked at the Scribner Bank. During her married life John and Joyce raised their family in Scribner , Nebraska , and Mitchell and Madison , South Dakota , before moving to Deshler in October, 1960. She supported her husband in various businesses: hatchery, construction, grain bin erection, and bookkeeping for each business venture. Her most important work, however, was raising her family. Joyce found enjoyment in observing nature, reading, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Her creative and artistic outlets included sewing, altering, and counted cross-stitch. In her lifetime she made thousands of cookies for her family and their friends. She grew up during the Great Depression and learned "to make do with what one has"; therefore, she became an "Original Repurposer"!! She had a great love for America. But, her greatest passion was to drop whatever she was doing and push up her sleeves to help her children with their many and varied projects. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband John; her sister Dolores Bergland; brothers-in-law Dwain Bergland, Leander Walter, and Ray Zucker; sisters-in-law Jeanette Zucker and Jo Anne Zucker; and great-grandson Evan Zucker.
