Kenneth Dale Buckles, son of Chester and Willa (Crump) Buckles, was born October 30, 1924 near Lodgepole, Nebraska. He passed from this life Sunday, July 29, 2018 in Hebron, Nebraska at the age of 93 years. Kenneth was the oldest of four children. He was baptized into the Christian faith at the First Christian Church in Nelson, Nebraska by his uncle, Pastor Ray E. Buckles on November 21, 1937 and confirmed in the American Lutheran Church, Lincoln, Nebraska on March 18, 1951 by Reverend E.R. Stolz. His grade school education was in several schools in Nuckolls County. Kenneth graduated from Ruskin High School with the Class of 1943, Valedictorian of his class. He was united in marriage to Helen Schaeffer on February 26, 1950. Their union was blest with three children: Douglas, 1954, Janet, 1961, and Jay, 1964. Following their wedding, they lived in Lincoln, Nebraska where he drove a delivery truck for Smith Baking Company and Gamble Robinson Produce. They moved back to Thayer County to a farm near Gilead in 1954 and later near Hebron. Working for Harold Werner from Hebron, he helped put down one of the first irrigation wells in Thayer County. After having a farm sale in 1958, they moved to Davenport, Nebraska and purchased the service station and garage. Kenneth enjoyed meeting the public and always served the customers with a smile and positive attitude. He was a born mechanic and handyman who could repair anything. A few years later they built and operated a farm store and Tire Warehouse. He enjoyed fishing and hunting whenever time allowed. Kenneth and Helen enjoyed square dancing for many years as members of the Spring Creek Swingers Club in Ruskin. As a hobby, Kenneth sewed quilts for Lutheran World Relief and also took them to the poor in Mexico. Kenneth sold Davenport Service and retired in June 1990. He then worked for Little Blue Natural Resource District for several years and also helped local farmers with harvesting. Kenneth was a member of the Davenport Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years and the Lions Club until 1990. He has been a member of Christ Lutheran Church since 1958, serving on the Church Council and as a Sunday school teacher. He and Helen traveled south to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas to spend time every winter. Kenneth was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to everyone. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jim and Roy; brothers-in-law, Bud Krogh, Gene Schaeffer, Vic Fisher, Bill Christensen, and John Davis; sisters-in-law, Delores Buckles and Irene Davis. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 68 years Helen, residing in Deshler; children, Douglas Buckles and wife Lynette, Tucson, AZ, Janet Bates and husband, Rick, Cody, WY, and Jay Buckles and wife, Kathy, Deshler; grandchildren, Alexcia (Jim) Klemish, Matt (Lyndsey) Bates, Sarah (Derek) Wiseman, Aaron and Austin Buckles; great-grandchildren, Emma, William, Olivia Klemish, Jordyn, Klayton Bates, Nevaeh, Nash Wiseman; sister, Alice Krogh, Lincoln, NE; many other relatives and a host of friends. "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; Love leaves a memory no one can steal."
