Mabel Christine Katherine (nee Schardt) Wegener was born February 20, 1914 in Thayer County, Nebraska, the third of eight children born to Ernst H. and Lillie (nee Vetter) Schardt. She was baptized on March 1, 1914 by Pastor H. Schabacker at Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau. She was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on May 20, 1928. Her confirmation verse was John 10:27, 28 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." Mabel went to Trinity Lutheran grade school and graduated from Carleton High School in 1932 penning the Class Song. On June 28, 1934 she was united in marriage to Paul F. Wegener at Trinity Lutheran Church. Together they were blessed with five children: Delbert, Marilyn, Shirley, Adell, and Donald. They lived on a farm near Ruskin, Nebraska from 1934 to 1948 before moving to a farm near Hebron, Nebraska and farmed there from 1948 to 1975 at which time they retired and moved into the community of Hebron. Paul passed away in 1991 and Mabel continued to live in their home until September 2003 at which time she moved to Courtyard Terrace assisted living, Hebron, due to her difficulty with eyesight and hearing. Mabel served her Lord at Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Ruskin, and Faith Lutheran Church, Hebron donating much of her time with the ladies quilting, sewing, baking, teaching Sunday school, helping wherever she was needed. For many years, Mabel loved gardening, flowers, baking, quilting, sewing, playing cards, bowling, and was especially gifted in writing poems and verse for special occasions. She was preceded in death by her parents; seven siblings; husband Paul in December 1991 and son, Delbert in January 1997; two sons-in-law; and a daughter-in-law. Mabel will be forever remembered by her daughters, Marilyn Smith, Shirley Mullins and husband Bernard, Adell Anthony and husband Gale; son Don Wegener and wife Lucy; eleven grandchildren; 26 great and great, great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Elaine Schardt. After being able to celebrate her 103 rd birthday on February 20 th with immediate family, Heaven’s choir began singing and a huge party welcomed the King’s precious daughter on Thursday, March 2 nd , 2017. Her work is done on earth!
Funeral services were held Monday, March 6, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church, Hebron, Nebraska with The Reverend Christopher Gerdes officiating. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Friedensau. The family requests memorials for the Lutheran Hour and Courtyard Terrace. Price-Urbauer-Ahrendts Funeral Homes of Hebron, Davenport, Deshler, Nebraska was in charge of these arrangements.
