Sonja Renae Doupnik Nutsch was born on October 16, 1944 at the Belleville, Kansas hospital to Benjamin Lee and Orvilla Cory Doupnik. She passed away on January 2, 2023 at Brodstone Healthcare in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 78 years, 2 months, 17 days.

Sonja attended school for 12 years in Agenda, KS and finished her 12 th grade in El Paso, TX while Ike was in the military. She came home to graduate with her Agenda, KS senior class of 1962.

Sonja married Melvin Ike Nutsch on October 4, 1961 at Fairbury, NE. It was four days after Ike was called to active duty on October 1, 1961 for the Berlin Crisis. Sonja left with a group of wives and stayed until the men were released from Fort Bliss, TX on October 15, 1962.

While Ike worked on the Wilson Dam, Sonja lived with Ike in Sylvan Grove, KS until it was completed.

They moved to Delphos, KS and Fairbury, NE for 2 years before moving to Byron, NE in 1966 and starting their own earth moving business, Nutsch Inc. Sonja kept the books for Nutsch Inc until 2017. To this union of over 61 years three children were born: Darren Kit Nutsch, Eric Jay Nutsch, and Wendy Renae Nutsch.

Sonja served on the Byron EMS & Byron Library Board. She was actively involved in her children’s activities including hauling the Pee Wee team in their station wagon to numerous ball games.

Ike & Sonja were avid Harley Davidson enthusiasts and rode his Harley for over 50 years including many road trips to Sturgis. Other interests included boating, skiing, and attending conventions for their business as they were charter members of Nebraska Land Improvement Contractors.

Most of all, Sonja was known for always being present in her grandchildren’s lives and attending their functions.

She is preceded in death by her parents Ben and Orvilla Doupnik; two brothers Ben and Barry Doupnik; and mother and father-in-law Henry and Alta Nutsch.

Sonja is survived by her husband Ike of Byron, son Darren Kit Nutsch of Chester, son Eric Jay Nutsch & wife Linda of Chester, and daughter Wendy Renae Nutsch of Byron; 12 Grandchildren & 18 Great-Grandchildren, plus one on the way.

Graveside services will take place at the Chester Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday, January 6th followed by a celebration of life at The Acreage in Hubbell, NE.   Visitation will be Thursday, January 5th, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Price Funeral Home in Hebron, NE.   Memorial donations can be directed to the Byron EMS or Chester EMS.  Price Funeral Home of Hebron is assisting the family with arrangements. www.priceurbauerahrendts.com
