Steven A. Meyer, 73, of Hebron, NE passed away on January 4th, 2026. After a short battle with cancer, an acute infection took his life unexpectedly. He passed away at Bryan Medical Center, West in Lincoln, NE surrounded by his immediate family.
Steve was born on March 31st, 1952 in Omaha, NE and raised in Deshler, NE by his parents Arthur and Alice Meyer. He was baptized on June, 6th, 1952 at Mt. Olive Church in Omaha, NE. He attended Peace Lutheran Parochial School, was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church on April 3rd 1966, and graduated from Deshler Public High School in 1970. Steve attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and Agricultural Education and was an active member in the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He married Betty Easton on January 7th, 1973. They resided in Lincoln, NE where Steve worked for University of Nebraska Research Farms – Beef and Swine. In 1977, Steve and Betty returned home to Thayer County to farm. He established SAM Farms and raised grain crops and cattle. Steve continued farming until his death.
Steve was active in the community. He served for many years on the Thayer County Fair board and Thayer County Livestock Feeders Association and was a Pony Express rider. He was also a member of The Pioneer Shrine Club – Hebron/Fairbury and Thayer County Izaak Walton League.
Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a stranger to no one. He was known for his outgoing personality and his love for family, friends, farming, fishing, and football. He also enjoyed participating in golf and bowling leagues and weekly card games with friends. Steve loved an “event,” or as our family calls them, a “Stevent”, whether it was a day at the lake, attending his granddaughters’ activities, a Husker football tailgate, a getaway with friends or a family vacation, Steve was always ready to go. Without a doubt his life advice was to “take the trip, make the memories, and eat the food” and he did just that. His love language was people, time together, and a great meal. Steve always felt fortunate that he had so many friends that became his family.
Steve is survived by his wife, Betty Easton Meyer, son, Spencer A. Meyer (KD Meyer) of Costa Mesa, CA, daughter, Cassie Schmid (Aaron Schmid) and granddaughters Ansley and Ellie Cahill of Grand Island, NE, his sisters-in-law Connie Heckman of Lincoln, NE and Cindy Petersen of Hebron, NE, and his step-siblings and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Meyer of Deshler, NE, Alice & Edgar Kirchhoff of Deshler, NE, and his grandparents.
