Don Alan Holmes was born September 19, 1946 in Deshler, Nebraska to Harry and Evelyn (Harmes) Holmes. He passed away on October 15, 2019 at his home on the farm.
He was one of five children. He lived by Byron, Nebraska until 1956 when the family moved to a farm 5 ½ miles south of Davenport, Nebraska.
He graduated from Davenport Community Schools in 1964. He went on to UNL where he received his bachelor's degree in Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering in 1970.
He joined the US Army in 1970. He served 19 months of active duty in the Vietnam war. He served 4 more years in the Army Reserves before being honorable discharged in 1976.
When he returned home from the war, he helped run the family farm. He farmed until 1996. He was a self taught man. He enjoyed his machine tools, raising animals, hunting, fishing and flying, which he learned through the GI Bill program.
He was united in marriage to Kathleen Marie Pomeroy on March 17, 1979 in Sutton, Nebraska at the Sutton Catholic Church. To this union, one daughter was born, Lenora Holmes.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen, his parents, Harry and Evelyn, and sister, Shirley Joan Hobelman.
He is survived by his daughter, Lenora Holmes of Hastings, Ne, brother, Elmer (Diane) Holmes of Byron, Ne, sisters, Julia Bryant of Bettendorf, IA, and Cynthia (Duane) Meade of Normal, Ill, many nieces and nephews, a host of very dear friends, and his little fur buddy, Paco.
A Memorial service with Military Honors will be held at 11:00am Friday, December 6, 2019 at the Oak Community Church, Oak Nebraska. Family inurnment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Urbauer-Price Funeral Home, Davenport, Nebraska has presented this obituary for the Holmes family.
